We are currently restructuring our memberships...No we are not part of any union and never will be...we do go to bat for the guys when need be...there is no wildland firefighters union..there is another organization...as far as we know they do alot of wining and dining with congress and such...and try to get some things done..I was a member once of theirs and left it in a year...We work on making things better for firefighters in the country working in wildland..we know alot of people in washington dc and get done what we need done...we have not and will never take government ,money to operate this association...I will let you know about our membership as soon as we get it completed..which will be before fire season starts...

Hello Gayle..and welcome to our site...For an entry level first time wildland firefighter...the best place to start and one of the only places they start is on a handcrew...these are men and women who dig fire line by hand clearing brush down to bare soil...then you have the hotshots...this is an elite crew that works alot like a handcrew..but are in the absolute best shape a body can be in to get this job...they usually go into places to fight fire that handcrews do not go...Helitack is a specialize form of wildland fire....firefighters in this field are rappellers...they rappell from a helicopter into an area to fight fire..there are many other support jobs in helitack...I worked in helitack for 28 years...actually I have worked in all the positions in wildland fire...engines are just that fire engines...they work with hose and water and do alot of mop up and structure protection and some clearing...smokejumpers jump from airplanes into an area to fight fire....then there are heavy equipment operators...bulldozers and skidders and such...and there are many many other support jobs to keep all these guys working...including emergency medical techs and medics....Please go to our main site and sign up on there...there are alot more people on that site..you will find the link on the main page of this site....I hope this helps you with what you need to know...If not you can call me anytime during the day at...828-674-6147....My name is Mike Presnell and I'am the president of this association../b>
